Maldon's new Town Mayor was announced last night (Tuesday, 6 May).

Councillor David Ogg became Mayor at Maldon Town Council's Annual Meeting, taking over the reins from Councillor Abdul Hafiz.

Town Mayoress will be Cllr Ogg's wife, Sharon Ogg.

Leaving his role after serving the town as Mayor in the year of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cllr Hafiz, also known as Jhual, said: "It's been a pleasure to serve this town and the great people of this great community.

"I am retiring from the role now, but I hope that I will get another chance to serve as Mayor again one day, when things will hopefully be different."

Accepting the role, new Town Mayor, Cllr Ogg, said: "This is a great honour. I would like to thank Cllr Hafiz for his work as Mayor, which he has carried out so well despite all the difficulties."

The Mayor's chosen charities for the year will be The Sea-Change Sailing Trust and Churches Together.

Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Andrew Lay. His wife Karen will be Deputy Mayoress.
