ONE hundred years of the Maldon & Heybridge Branch of the Royal British Legion were celebrated on Friday (23 July) at Maldon's Promenade Park - with a 97-year-old D-Day veteran and past chairman proudly looking on.

Many passers-by may have noticed the beautiful flower beds at the Prom, commemorating the local branch's centenary year. On Friday, A certificate marking the occasion was presented to Branch Chairman Glenn Mayes by Royal British Legion County Chairman David Swann.

Branch Secretary Jeanette Stilts said: "The Maldon & Heybridge District Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to thank Sue Finch for the design of the flower beds and all her hard work in planting up the wonderful display for the 100 year celebration."

The Branch was formed in 1921 and was a very active one, kept in existence by a dedicated committee whose past chairman Ron Baker (Royal Marine & D Day veteran) stepped down last August at the age of 97. Glenn Mayes took over from him.

Jeanette Stilts, who took over as secretary from Peter Webb in 2018, added: "I am honoured to be part of the history of this Branch.

"We are always looking for more members and are now starting to bring the Branch back to its active role in the community."
