Choosing Aluminium Windows And Doors: What Homeowners Should Know

By The Editor 26th Oct 2026

Windows and doors shape a home’s appearance, comfort and security.

Replacing them involves more than choosing a frame colour. Aluminium suits contemporary homes and renovations because it combines a slim profile with structural strength, but the result depends on matching the complete system to the property and fitting it correctly.

Look Beyond The Frame

Aluminium's strength means slim doors and windows, more glass to flood a living room with light, or a closer link to the garden from a kitchen or extension. Doors and windows come in a wide range of finishes to match or contrast with brickwork, render, roof materials, existing doors and windows.

However great the plan, it still needs to be the most suitable. Lots of glass suits a new extension building, while more traditional aluminium doors and windows still look better. The number and size of windows will determine how they open, and planning will be needed for furniture and fittings, access, privacy, and room use. Windows open in different ways to provide ventilation, and sometimes a sliding door to a garden patio may be a better option than a bifolding door.

Comfort Depends On The Whole System

Aluminium is a material that transfers heat easily and this has to be considered in the design of external windows and doors. A thermally broken profile interrupts the material between the outer and inner frames to reduce heat transfer. Combine this with suitable double or triple glazing, appropriate seals, and correctly fitted frames to reduce heat loss and draughts.

When comparing specifications, look at the whole product rather than an individual frame figure. The U value is the sum of how much heat a component allows through; the lower the U value, the more effectively the component keeps heat in. But the value of the glass you will choose will also be dictated by the performance needed for solar gain, daylight and acoustics, depending on the orientation and location of a room, and will also affect U values.

It's not just the windows and doors that need installing at the right location, but the finish around the door or the window. Even the best product can perform badly if the hole dimensions are incorrect and it's not sealed properly afterwards. Ensure you know how they will seal and insulate the product in the opening and do they understand the risk of cold bridging.

Security Is More Than A Lock

To be secure, a window or door relies on a combination of factors: the frame, glazing, hinges, locking points, and how the opening is fitted into the surrounding wall. If you have ground-floor windows, patio doors that are easy to get to, or concealed windows, it's worth finding out if there are security upgrades available to be tested rather than assuming a sturdy-looking frame means the window is sufficient.

There are some products that have been tested and classified via European standard EN 1627, which sets out resistance classes for windows, doors, and building elements to forcible entry. The classification refers to the ability of a complete element to withstand a series of test attempts to gain entry, not that it will prevent unauthorised entry. The exact class available depends on the configuration and components specified.

Homeowners researching anti-burglar windows should therefore check what is included in the tested design. Security glazing, reinforced hardware and appropriate locking mechanisms may all be relevant, but components must be compatible and installed according to the system requirements. Ask for the documentation behind any claimed classification and consider security alongside everyday needs such as safe ventilation and easy access.

Choose For The Property, Not Just The Trend

Before you ask for quotes, know your priorities: insulation, sound attenuation, safety, opening options, colour and cost, whether you are replacing a few windows or full elevations of glazing. This way, the installer will be able to recommend a suitable specification without leaving out any features you want or asking you to pay extra for something you don't.

A range of aluminium window and door systems, such as those shown by Aluprof, demonstrates how profiles are matched to functions and specific applications in buildings. The composition of the product itself, the type of glass and ironmongery, takes precedence over the material used, so ask for a published specification that details performance, finishes, guarantees and maintenance.

Get The Installation Right

In England, building regulations may apply when windows and doors are replaced, a document on the government website says. Government guidance on competent person schemes explains that registered installers can self-certify compliance and provide a certificate. Check the registration card that they show you lists the type of work they do, ask them who is going to self-certify your home to the building inspector, and keep the certificate at home with your other records.

Aluminium generally needs relatively little maintenance, but keep an eye on the hinges, locks, drainage channels and gaskets still benefit from periodic checks and cleaning according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you follow the guidelines and keep an eye on the front profile for clogging, these doors should continue to move, slide, and seal like new.

The strongest choice is not necessarily the most elaborate one. Look for a complete system that suits the property, meets the performance requirements and can be installed well. Careful decisions about glazing, security and fitting will make a greater difference to everyday comfort than choosing a frame on appearance alone.
