Emergency services are at the scene of an accident involving an overturned vehicle close to Bentalls Shopping Centre in Heybridge, Maldon.

The accident took place on the main road close to the shopping centre at around 2.45pm this afternoon (Monday, 6 September).

The East of England Ambulance Service, Essex County Fire & Rescue Service and Essex Police are all on the scene.

Police had sealed off the area with tape, which caused journey delays for vehicles and for people on foot.

Children who had just left school had to reroute themselves to find a way home as they could not pass through the road.

The incident caused traffic disruption throughout Maldon, particularly through the town, with police officers turning cars away at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that traffic close to the scene came to a "standstill".

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We were called to an incident in Colchester Road, Heybridge, shortly before 2.45pm today, Monday 6 September.

"It was reported that a vehicle had fallen onto its side.

"We arrived to secure the scene and worked alongside firefighters and medics.

"A road closure was put in place, which was lifted by 5.30pm.

"Our enquiries are ongoing."
