The design for the housing development earmarked for Primrose Meadow is "evolving", Essex Housing Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) has said.

The details emerged in a Maldon Town Council meeting last night (Monday 25 October), in which Councillor Jane Fleming, who sits on Essex County Council, gave members an update on possible plans for the field.

She said: "In anticipation of this meeting, I emailed Essex Housing for an update.

"They said that they are looking at evolving the design and that there was nothing else to report."

The county council confirmed in July that its housing development company - Essex Housing LLP - had earmarked Primrose Meadow, on Mundon Road, for housing.

This has been met with strong opposition from residents, many of whom would like to see the meadow left to the community and to nature - for instance, by turning it into a town green or a nature reserve.

The Stand Against Primrose Meadow Development campaign group was formed by residents in August and now stands at 644 members.

Sammie Shurety, a member of the group who lives on Primrose Walk, said: "They can change the design as much as they want, but they should listen to the people, and 90 per cent of us believe in keeping it as a field."

Anna Fay, who moved into a home close to the meadow last November, said: "The almost 700 members of our Stand Against Primrose Meadow Development group are still in the dark about this development."

Sammie added: "The county council should come and talk to the people and find out how this will impact us directly."

No related planning applications have been submitted to Maldon District Council yet.
