The following is a report by John Salisbury on behalf of Maldon Film Club.

On behalf of the committee of Maldon Film Club I am delighted to confirm that our 2021/22 season will commence, as planned, on Tuesday, 7th September, 2021.

The club will continue to meet at Maldon Town Hall. Doors will open at 7.30pm and all films will start at 8pm sharp. The programme for the season with information about each film is available on our website using the link here.

Arrangements will be put in place to ensure that you can watch this season's films in a safe and secure environment and until further notice only fully paid-up members will be admitted.

The new season begins with the screening of the highly acclaimed The White Crow directed by Ralph Fiennes. Set in Paris in the early 1960s, with the Cold War still raging, the Soviet authorities decided to send their finest dance troupe to the City Of Light and one man, Rudolph Nureyev, caused a sensation that reverberated far beyond the stage. Fiennes captures the raw physicality and brilliance of Nureyev whose escape to the West stunned the world.

Our second film for September, on Tuesday 21st, is the Oscar nominated A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism. The film is based on the story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and a jaded journalist, Tom Junod, played by Emmy winner Matthew Rhys. Junod learns about empathy, kindness and decency from America's most beloved neighbour.

As always, the programme for our new season covers a wide variety of themes with films from different regions of the world. Included in the programme are the award winning A Taste of Honey, Bait, Jo Jo Rabbit, Parasite, Sorry We Missed You and The Farewell as well as Corpus Christi, For Sama, Honeyland, Knives Out, Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Pain and Glory all of which received at least one Oscar or Golden Globe nomination.

The season continues until 25th May, 2022, with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2021 and Wednesdays in 2022.

The club works on a membership basis and is run by a committee that selects and screens an annual programme of films from the best of recent English and foreign language releases plus one "classic/members' choice".

The price of an annual subscription is just £25 which entitles members to free admission to all of the season's films - excellent value even if not all 19 films are attended. In addition there are a limited number of places for junior members aged 16-18 in full-time education and training at the reduced cost of £18. Membership is open to all and new members will be made very welcome

For further details and an application form please check out our web site using theb link here, visit the Maldon Visitor Information Centre from 11am to 4pm,, Tuesday to Saturday or contact me, John Salisbury, on 07905 971608.
