Plans to renovate one of Maldon's oldest homes will be debated by the town council next week

MALDON Town Council will debate a planning application for restoration and alterations to one of the town's oldest homes next week.

Plans to renovate and alter the Grade II* listed house formerly known as 'Chandlers' at 4, Silver Street were submitted to Maldon District Council (MDC) earlier this month (May).

The town council's Planning Committee will not have the final say on whether the works go ahead, but as a consultee will give an opinion on whether or not the proposals should be approved to the district council, which will make the decision on a date yet to be set.

The name of the house has been changed to 'Josua' in the application documents, named after the first owner identified by historical research. It is thought Josua lived in the house in the Fifteenth Century.

New owner Neil Bresler has been working alongside MDC's Conservation Officer, Tim Howson, in uncovering the history of the house over the past year.

The proposed restorations include the demolition of a 20th Century lean-to and the replacement of windows with ones which are more historically appropriate, among a range of other works, both exterior and interior.
