The flooding situation across Maldon district has been worsening throughout the day with a number of areas and roads now affected.

The picture shown was taken this morning at Ferry Road in Creeksea in Burnham.

Flooding has also been reported in Goldhanger, Latchingdon and Mundon.

In the last hour, Essex Highways tweeted: "If you an have option don't drive! Remember, essential travel only and if you can delay travel until rain stops and flood waters subside, please do.

"Flooding is getting worse as the ground is already saturated. If water level is high, road drains have nowhere to drain to."

A statement from Maldon District Council reads: "The council is aware that heavy overnight rain has resulted in surface water flooding to some roads and ditches have over topped in some areas.

"The council is prioritising support for those who are vulnerable, but we do not supply sandbags to protect properties, these are available from local builders merchants.

"If the flooding is from a highway call Essex County Council and if there is a risk to life call 999 and ask for the fire service. If you are a vulnerable person, please call 01621 854477 for assistance.

"Any need for immediate assistance should be directed to 999."
