A key Maldon figure has urged residents from across the district to get on board with a new drive to help people affected by dementia to feel part of the community.

Sarah Troop, Director of Maldon District CVS (Community Volunteering Service), is well-known for her work for local people and was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) last year for her services to the community during the pandemic, co-ordinating the efforts of numerous volunteers and organisations.

Now Sarah is championing the cause of the newly-formed Maldon District Dementia Action Alliance, announced this week after people and organisations working in the district came together to help people affected by dementia to access local services and feel part of the

wider community.

Sarah told Maldon Nub News: "It's just so important that people get on board with this and let us know what would help and what is needed. We need those whose lives are affected by dementia to come forward and tell us what we can do and what needs to be changed. We really want to know how we can help."

The aim is to create a more supportive and understanding 'Dementia Friendly' environment for people affected by dementia, with the new Alliance

bringing together local residents and professionals to build on

existing community strengths and to better understand local needs.

Meetings are currently being held online and everyone is welcome to attend to help shape local plans and activities to support people living with dementia and their carers across the Maldon District.

A spokesperson for the Alliance added: "Within the district there is a lot of existing support for local people and the Dementia Action Alliance

are keen to help people to find services that might help them, their friends and families.

"This is particularly important at the moment when so many people are feeling anxious and isolated."

The Dementia Action Alliance is also encouraging local organisations to list their activities on the Essex Map - a free online directory of local services designed to help people to find support and advice.
