Covid cases are rising again in two areas of the Maldon district, after all regions reported a fall in cases last week.

Burnham-on-Crouch recorded the biggest increase in cases in percentage terms, at 45.5 per cent, according to the latest interactive map published by the Government for the seven-day period ending on Tuesday, 18 January.

The Mayland, Althorne and Cold Norton area saw the second biggest rise, at 30.4 per cent.

Maldon North recorded no change in cases, while the remaining five areas saw a continued drop in cases.

All areas had previously reported a drop in cases - for the seven-day period ending on Tuesday, 11 January.

It comes as Plan B restrictions introduced to tackle the spread of the Omicron variant are set to lift.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said the measures - compulsory mask-wearing on public transport and in shops, guidance to work from home and vaccine certificates - will be fully scrapped from Thursday (27 January).

Organisations will be able to choose whether or not to require NHS Covid passes.

Self-isolation rules will remain in place but the Government will review them before they are due for renewal in March, Mr Johnson said.

Following the announcement, the Mid and South Essex Health Care Partnership confirmed people should continue to wear a face covering and observe social distancing in healthcare settings including GP practices, dental practices, optometrists and pharmacies.

Local GP Dr Anna Davey said: "As restrictions are lifted in many places everyone still has a part to play in helping to control the virus by getting vaccinated and acting responsibly.

"It is vital that in all healthcare settings we do all we can to reduce the risk of infection for those working in our services and those who need our care."
