Maldon Town Council looking for two passionate community members to join its ranks.

Maldon Town Council is calling upon community members who are passionate about making a positive difference in their town as candidates for Co-option to Maldon Town

Council. This rare opportunity allows individuals to actively contribute to the decisions that will shape Maldon Town's future.

There are two vacancies available, one in the West Ward and one in the North. The vacancies arose following the sad passing of Flo Shaughnessy, and resignation of Nigel Miller.

Following Notice of Vacancy, no by-election has been called and Maldon Town Council has decided to Co-opt into the positions. The term of office will run until May 2027.

Town Councillors are responsible for a wide range of duties, including attending Council and Committee meetings, representing the interest of local residents at meetings and public events, engaging with residents and speaking to local groups and bodies on behalf of the council.

Maldon Town Council's current priorities include development of a neighbourhood plan, protecting its Grade I listed buildings, development of a new website, and delivering against its environmental improvement action plan.

Those interested are also encouraged to talk to existing Councillors, whose contact details are on the Town Council's website, and also displayed on the noticeboard outside the Town Hall, Market Hill, Maldon, CM9 4RL.

To apply you must meet a certain criteria, to qualify, a person must:

  • Be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a qualifying EU citizen or an EU citizen with retained rights.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Meet at least one of the following three qualifications:
  • You are and will continue to be, registered as a local government elector for the parish you wish to attend from the day of your nomination onwards.
  • You have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the parish area during the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of the election.
  • Your principal or only place of work during the 12 months before your nomination and the day of the election has been in the parish area.
  • Must not be disqualified from holding office as a Councillor.

To be considered as a candidate for Co-option, you need to submit an application form. This form can be downloaded from Maldon Town Council's website, or a paper copy obtained from the Town Hall, Market Hill, Maldon, Essex, CM9 4RL.

Application forms must be delivered to the Town Clerk, at the same address, no later than 4pm on Friday 23rd May 2025.

Eligible candidates will be required to attend a meeting of the Town Council on Thursday 5th June 2025 at 7pm, to put their case forward.

Residents are urged to encourage suitable candidates in their community to run for Council.

Cllr Andrew Lay, Maldon Town Mayor, said "Whether you are interested in putting yourself forward as a candidate, or you are a resident who would like to encourage a friend,  colleague or a family member to put themselves forward, your voice matters.

"I would encourage residents to get involved in this wonderful community and help shape the future of our Town."
