Outpatient services currently held at St Peter's Hospital will remain while the NHS "does some thinking" on where a new health hub location should go in the town - the NHS Mid and South Essex ICB has decided.

In today's meeting (July 17), the decision was made to vote with the recommendations made by the independent community services working group to keep the facility operational for five years.

This means outpatient care, including all pre and post-natal appointments held at the hospital, will stay in the town.

However, inpatient care beds, stroke services and the midwife led birthing unit will be relocated as planned.

Tom Abell, Chief Executive for NHS Mid and South Essex said: "I think there is real opportunity to bring this work together with the ambitions we set out in the 10 Year Plan for neighbourhoods across England to be able to access services in an NHS centre.

"Maldon would clearly be a fantastic location for such a centre. We are looking at a range of options now so we can provide something really positive.

"This is an exciting opportunity to bring together a neighbourhood in mid and south Essex."

Describing this decision as "the end of the long journey," he added: "We've learnt a lot during this process in terms of reflecting back on the opportunity to be clearer on where the ambulatory care services were proposed to go... we could've done further work with those services before going ahead with the consultation.

"There's lots to learn from this process and we will use what we've learnt to move onto the next stage."

While the ICB has promised to keep services at St Peter's for five years, they maintain the site is "high risk and unsuitable for long term clinical care."

Rather than keep the estate into the future, the ICB says it will now look at how to "optimise" its use in the short-term, through capital investment and continuous assessment.

However, leaders confirmed "no other viable sites" have been identified as of yet.
