Celebrations are set to take place in Maldon to mark the Queen becoming the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee - and details of what is planned have now been revealed.

A four-day Bank Holiday weekend will begin on Thursday, 2 June and continue over the weekend until Sunday, 5 June to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Queen's accession.

A report has now been put together by Maldon Town Council's platinum jubilee working party, detailing what is planned for residents over the four-day period.

There will be a service at All Saints Church in Maldon, which will be invitation only for the time being due to potential Covid restrictions.

The report says councillors "agreed to find out what time other services nationally and in the local area are taking place before setting a date or time to avoid clashes".

There is a red, white and blue theme planned for the town, including a bunting installed along the High Street and the decoration of Moot Hall as a focal point of the displays.

Members also agreed the council "could encourage and support residents to host their own street parties", such as by providing information on how to apply for a road closure.

The report adds: "If residents let the council know about their event in advance, the town mayor can potentially put in an appearance if possible.

"Residents could also submit photos of their event to create a permanent archive."

Members are also set to discuss a proposal to plant two trees to form an arch on Olympic Walk.

There will be seven trees planted across the town's four wards as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative, which encourages people across the UK to plant a tree for the Jubilee.

One tree each will be planted in Leeches Garden, Lower Plume School, Upper Plume School, Longship Way and Wentworth Primary School, while approval is still being sought to plant a tree along Cross Road.

Two trees will be planted in St Mary's Churchyard.

The planting will begin in spring.

The lighting of the beacon in Promenade Park has been confirmed, but further details on the district council's plans for the four-day weekend are yet to be revealed.

The town council is set to discuss the plans further at its next meeting on Monday (31 January).
