There are two jobs up for grabs at the Combined Military Services Museum (CMSM) in Maldon, as the leading venue prepares to launch an exciting new project.

The museum is looking for a part-time collections care and maintenance assistant as well as a digital archivist, on a one-year contract with potential to extend, and applications for both roles close on Tuesday (1 February).

The successful candidate for the digital archivist role will help staff create a new digital museum, after the venue secured funding for the first year of the project.

The digital museum will operate in addition to the venue's existing physical collection of British military artefacts from the English Civil War to today - including one of Europe's largest public displays of firearms, medical equipment used on battlefields and combat uniforms alongside medals, swords, armour, missiles and three pieces of field artillery on outdoor display.

Julie Miller, curator at CMSM, said: "It's exciting for us to be able to offer two new employment opportunities, and the digital archivist is particularly interesting because we have received a grant to fund it.

"We are aiming to create a digital museum which will make us of worldwide interest."

Responsibilities for the digital archivist role include 2D and 3D scanning of the museum's special operations executive and special forces archive material and exhibits to create a unique digital online offering.

The role will involve creating well-organised digital files, repairing CAD files and managing the digital archives alongside working with staff in the physical museum to help with events and social media campaigns.

If the project is successful, subsequent funding will enable the role to continue.

Required skills include CAD experience, IT literacy and organisational skills.

A degree in history or museum studies alongside experience in 3D scanning and an interest in military history is preferred, but not essential.

Training will be provided.

The new collections care and maintenance assistant would also be key to the success of the museum, working in a team to help preserve its collection, galleries and outside space.

Other responsibilities include taking part in the day-to-day running of the museum, including front-of-house duties and helping members of the public enjoy their visit.

Required skills include GCSE Maths and English, or equivalent, the ability to work safely, experience in DIY, maintenance or related tasks and a willingness to work in a team and independently.

Being literate in IT and having an interest in military history is highly desirable.

The role is listed as 22.5 hours a week, at £10 an hour.

You can find CMSM on Station Road in Heybridge, Maldon.
