ESSEX Police have produced this video to show how drones are used to catch criminals and help keep the community safe – in Maldon and across the county.

The high-flying technology carries cameras to enable police to get a bird's eye view from up to 120m of almost any situation – and with a 500m range.

The very latest high spec drones deployed by the service include thermal imaging cameras and a zoom facility, to get a closer look at what's happening on the ground.

The devices are used for everything from giving an advantage in pursuits to helping find people reported as missing.

Since 2016, Essex has increased the use of police drones from 15 deployments to 420 last year – and with 36 police personnel now with specialist training in their use.

Essex 2020 is a project which celebrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) and highlights the county's enterprising past while inspiring a future for science and creativity in Essex. As part of this, Essex Police are telling the public about the abilities of many of their teams.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: "Here at Essex Police, we are constantly thinking of new and innovative ways to help people, keep them safe and to catch criminals.

"We have seen many changes over the decades with some really fantastic capabilities, but one thing has remained strong over our 180 year history – our commitment to protecting and serving all communities."
