EXCLUSIVE: Maldon’s Primrose Meadow development consultation to begin this month - neighbours come together in bid to save it
Essex Housing is encouraging residents to take part in the Primrose Meadow consultation process, set to begin with a public exhibition in Maldon on October 17.
The drop-in event will be held at the Methodist Church in Maldon High Street, from 4pm to 8pm.
Essex Housing says it is 'in the early stages' of considering plans for a potential residential development at the field, just off Mundon Road, Maldon.
Part of the site is owned by Plume Academy.
When asked how developing the land would benefit the Academy's students, an Essex Housing spokesperson told Nub News: "Any development would provide funds, in addition to County Council grant funding, needed to expand the school to ensure sufficient secondary school places to meet the growing demand in Maldon, and to reinvest in the delivery of County Council services."
A spokesperson for the Academy has been approached for comment.
Maldon Town Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lay, says it is important that "as many Maldon residents as possible" can participate in and express their views at the public consultation this month.
Last Saturday (October 1), Mundon Road residents came together to 'tidy up' the popular green space which is currently earmarked for development.
They were helped by more than a dozen 1st Maldon Scout Group Beavers, who brought painted rocks adorned with patterns and 'save the green' messages.
There are hopes to encourage more wildlife in the area, and for local people to enjoy the wildlife already inhabiting it.
Janet Mayes, part of the Stand Against Primrose Meadow Development campaign, told Nub News: "On the day of the Queen's funeral, I sprinkled wild meadow seeds on the outer edge of the field near a tree.
"It would be good to add a few wild roses, and other hedgerow bushes, for birds to nest in - and show the seasons, so children can appreciate seeing the natural environment."
Over 1,000 people have joined the Facebook group so far, to speak out against development of the land.
Last Thursday (September 29), neighbouring residents received a letter from Essex Housing, outlining its proposals for a 124-home development.
In the same letter, residents were asked to register for the online webinar via the official consultation website, once it goes live on Monday 17 October.
