Maldon Fire Station Firefighters attended a straw stack fire on Saturday, September 14.

Teams attended the land on Maypole Road on Saturday evening, with firefighters remaining on site over the weekend to oversee the controlled burn of the bales.

In a post on social media this morning (September 16), Maldon Fire Station described the incident, detailing how observation was needed throughout Saturday night and periodically on Sunday.

Control has now been handed over to the land owner as the stack has burned to a safe level, presenting no immediate risk to the surrounding area.

The incident comes just over a month since Essex County Fire & Rescue Service urged farmers to prioritise fire safety, after the service responded to 396 incidents at farms in Essex from June 2023 - June 2024.

These included 52 incidents involving baled crop.
