Large marquee appears in Promenade Park ahead of filming for The Essex Serpent

A huge marquee erected in Promenade Park has been put up ahead of the filming of scenes for the TV adaptation of Sarah Perry's 'The Essex Serpent'.

It is understood that some scenes will be filmed in the Prom and Hythe Quay areas, as well as in some street locations around Maldon.

Maldon Nub News reported back in February that parts of the major new TV drama, set in Victorian times, would be to in Maldon.

Locations where filming takes place are likely to be 'dressed' to resemble times past and so provide a realistic backdrop to the story.

The show will star actress Clare Danes in the role of Cora, the novel's central character, who comes to live in 'Aldwinter' where she becomes fascinated by a mysterious mythical creature - the 'Essex serpent' of the title.

Clare Danes is famous for her previous role in 'Homeland' as a CIA spy. It is understood she replaced actress Keira Knightley, who was set to take on the role but had to pull out due to pandemic childcare concerns, it is understood.

Earlier this week it was announced that actor Tom Hiddleston will star alongside Clare Danes, though it is unclear whether he will be involved in any of the scenes shot in Maldon.

In his February newsletter, Maldon MP John Whittingdale wrote that he had been pleased to assist local authorities in getting permission to film in local streets.

A spokesperson for Maldon District Council said today: "We are delighted that the production company has chosen the Maldon District as one of their locations for a new six-part drama.

"We have an enviable reputation for being extremely film friendly and this production follows in the footsteps of many others who have filmed here.

"They will be operating in line with the Government's guidelines which legally permits them to undertake Covid-secure film and television production. They have a sizeable base on Promenade Park, and they will minimise any disruption during their filming and ensure safety can be maintained at all times.

"We would remind everyone that whilst this is clearly exciting, social distancing must still be maintained at all times."

The drama will appear on Apple TV, though no date has yet been announced.
