Local Development Plan could be revisited early: councillors to discuss the issue tonight

On the agenda tonight (Tuesday, 23 February) at a full meeting of Maldon District Council is a debate on whether to bring forward a review of the district's Local Development Plan (LDP).
The LDP is key to the local authority's planning decisions going forward and outlines development policy on everything from new housing and the land allocated for it to business development, leisure facilities and transport.
The plan was approved in July 2017 and is therefore up for review by July 2022 at the latest.
However, news in January that the council's consultation with the company behind proposals for Bradwell B has been put on hold has left the local authority in a position where staff are available for a review of the local plan.
It is also timely given proposed changes to planning law and targets for new housing by the Government, the effects on the local economy of the Covid-19, the council's 'Climate Emergency' decision, Brexit and a reduction in the supply of land for housing. A report from council officers to members reads: "Therefore, it is considered a good time to bring forward a review of the LDP to ensure the council's planning policy framework remains 'fit for purpose' and responsive to the district's changing needs." Councillors will vote on whether to adopt plans for an early LDP review.
