One hundred residents enjoyed a day of engaging talks at the second annual Silver Monday event at Maldon Stadium in Park Drive, on October 3.

Organised by Maldon District Council and Chelmsford City Council, the event aimed to provide guidance for residents who are in retirement or "approaching that phase of their lives".

Participants hoped to keep themselves informed on topics that allow them to be safe and aware of information and services, such as personal safety, fraud, scams, and safety in the home.

The morning presentations started with Sophie Ede from the charity Hearing Help, who explained that more than 250,000 people in Essex have some degree of hearing loss.

Lisa Mitson, from the Essex Fire and Rescue Service, provided information on how to keep safe in your own home.

One little-known service they offer is a home visit, to check smoke alarms, along with providing special alarms for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The service is free of charge to all Essex residents via the Home Safety Service, available to call on 0300 303 0088.

During the lunch break, Steph Gunn, from Zumba Dance, kept those who had the energy moving to the music.

Ryan Pegrum was next and spoke on behalf of the Community Voluntary Service, which helps build relationships within the Maldon District.

Essex Police provided useful items such as credit card covers, to protect them from fraud, and personal alarms.

David Gillies spoke on behalf of the police and gave lots of tips on how to keep yourself, and your money, safe.

The morning session concluded with a talk about Essex Libraries. Holly Brown, Community Connector at Essex County Council, promoted library services and upcoming events.

A buffet lunch followed with more time to look at the exhibitors, including: Crimestoppers, Citizens Advice, Headway Essex, Barclays Bank, Mid Essex Health in Mind, and the Alzheimer's Society.

After lunch, there was a presentation about Limebrook u3a. It explained the opportunities offered for people who are no longer in full employment to join u3a groups near them, to take part activities with like-minded people.

The successful event was rounded off with live music from Stuck in the Middle, an acoustic trio.
