In the days leading up to and including the Christmas and New Year holidays, Maldon Nub News will bring you messages from some key local figures. Some of these will be from politicians and so the views expressed are entirely their own.

Some will be long and others brief, but the thing they will have in common is their message to the people of Maldon as this most difficult of years draws to a close.

The following is a seasonal message from Councillor Penny Channer, Leader of the Conservative group at Maldon District Council.

"What an extraordinary year 2020 has been.

"Who would have imagined as we saw in the last New Year of the difficulties and challenges that lay ahead of us due to the arrival of Covid-19?

"We have shared one of the most challenging times in our history. So here we are now with Christmas fast approaching and finding ourselves in Tier 4 with the sacrifices, due to the restrictions, we must all make to help keep ourselves, our loved ones, plus others safe and well.

"I am proud of all the council officers in how, though working remotely, they remain dedicated, determined and have gone the extra mile to deliver services during these Covid times.

"They have been innovative to overcome any challenges that they may have faced. Members and officers continue working together to provide support to residents and businesses and the best possible services for the district.

"I have been humbled witnessing the way communities have pulled together with residents helping friends, neighbours and even strangers. People coming forward to volunteer to help ensure that the vulnerable, those socially isolated, and those in need did not feel abandoned.

"This gives me hope, others too, that communities will emerge even stronger following Covid-19.

"My thoughts are with those who at Christmas may be grieving the loss of a dear one; with those in hospital that may be battling Covid and other health issues; with those on the front line who often under immense pressure relentlessly give of themselves to do all that they can to save lives.

"During this Christmas season please keep to the rules. Please keep yourselves and all others safe and well by remembering Hands, Face, Space.

"I wish each and everyone of you the best possible Christmas bearing in mind the circumstances. With the vaccine now arriving I hope for a brighter more hopeful 2021 for everyone. I do believe that if we all play our part, standing and facing things together against this unwelcome visitor, that we will come through this. Battle weary maybe but come through it we will.

"Have a peaceful Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year."
