Maldon: Decision on plans to restore and alter one of the town's oldest homes should finally be made tomorrow

By The Editor 7th Sep 2021

A decision on whether planned renovations to one of Maldon's oldest homes can go ahead is expected tomorrow evening (Wednesday, 25 August).

The application to refurbish and alter the Grade II* listed house named 'Josua' - and formerly known as 'Chandlers' - at 4, Silver Street, is back on the agenda at Maldon District Council's (MDC's) Central Area Committee Planning Committee - after the decision was deferred at a meeting on 28 July to allow members to carry out a site visit.

The proposed restorations include the demolition of a 20th Century lean-to, some alterations to the cellar access and the replacement of a number of windows, among a range of other works, both exterior and interior.

However, while the application has the backing of the Maldon Society, Historic England and MDC's Conservation Officer, the council has also received 20 letters of objection to the proposals from nearby residents.

Maldon Town Council also recommended refusal of the application.

MDC's planning officers recommend approval of the plans, but the decision will be made by the committee members.
