A STATEMENT on the leadership of Maldon District Council has been released today (Friday, 21 August).

This follows news yesterday that the council's Tory group had elected a new leader and deputy on Wednesday evening - with the group leader taking on the interim role of council leader designate.

A spokesperson for Maldon Council said: "Following the recent resignations, the Conservative Group at Maldon District Council has announced Councillor Elaine Bamford Leader Designate of the Council and Councillor Mrs Penny Channer as Deputy Leader of the Council.

"These appointments will be ratified at meetings which are due to be held soon."

Councillor Elaine Bamford said: "Although my appointment as Leader Designate of Maldon District Council and Cllr Channer's position as my Deputy have yet to be ratified by council, I am hoping for support from all members, so we can move forward together positively and proactively to benefit all the Maldon District communities and residents."
