MALDON District Council has voted to change its stated position on the proposed new nuclear plant at Bradwell-on-Sea.

In a full council meeting yesterday (Thursday, 1 October) meeting, Independent Councillor Kevin Lagan put forward the following motion, supported by 16 votes from members, with 12 abstentions and two against:

"Although the council initially supported (in principle) a new nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea, a greater level of information is now available, and it is appropriate to reconsider its position.

"Grave concerns are raised regarding a new nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea, due to the local environmental impacts, the loss of heritage assets and ecological harm."

The motion was seconded by Independent Councillor Chrisy Morris.

Members also agreed to allow senior council officers to draft a response to the Government's consultation on the plans for the Bradwell B, so long as it is in consultation with both Council Leader, Conservative Councillor Elaine Bamford and Opposition Leader, Independent Councillor Mark Heard.

All councillors will receive copies of the draft response so that their views can be forwarded to the group leaders.
