Maldon District councillors back free self-defence training for women and girls
Maldon District Council has announced a free self-defence training session aimed at women and girls, held at Maldon Stadium from 5.30pm on Thursday 14 July.
Councillor Paula Spenceley told Nub News: "We all know, with some of the tragedies which have happened in London and other places over the last few months, that self-defence is an important skill for women.
"But it's not just about protecting yourself, it's also about making yourself feel more confident."
"Of course, women shouldn't need to have those skills. But it's an important thing to offer to women of all ages throughout the District."
The session at the stadium in Park Drive, Maldon, will finish at 7.15pm.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Penny Channer, and Deputy Leader Councillor Maddie Thompson, have shown their support for the initiative, saying they think it is a 'terrific' idea.
Cllr Thompson said: "It's a shame we need it at all.
"Further sessions would be very welcome, as not everybody will be able to make it."
Neither she nor Cllr Channer will be attending due to other commitments.
In a statement, Maldon District Council said the sessions "will provide highly effective and easy to remember skills to help people spot danger signs and take positive action to enhance your power when physical defence is the only option".
The Council said: "Learn techniques to help keep you safe, maintain control, and increase confidence in an unwanted situation."
It is hoped the session will 'empower' women and girls however all are welcome. The minimum age for participants is 11, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Spaces are on a 'first come, first served' basis.
