Parents and students struggling with the cost of school prom this year can receive free pre-loved outfits at Heybridge's Plantation Hall on Monday 8 May.

The initiative was started by former Essex firefighter Les Nicoll, to help less fortunate youngsters go to prom - a rite of passage for any secondary school leaver.

A spokesperson for Heybridge Parish Council said: "This is a great event, which is very much needed."

The Parish Council is already accepting donations from the community, which can be brought to Plantation Hall in Colchester Road, from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Residents can also bring donations on the day.

Dresses, suits, shoes, and bling will be on offer, all free of charge.

The scheme has proved "hugely successful" in Harwich, Clacton and elsewhere in Essex. Heybridge Parish Council says it is "extremely proud" to be able to support Les in bringing the initiative to the Maldon District.
