Organisations in the Maldon district are offering support to anyone interested in setting up a play street on their doorstep.

Maldon and District CVS (MDCVS), the Essex Children and Families Hub, Maldon District Council, Active Essex, United in Kind and the Moat Foundation are all keen to lend a hand to residents who would like to create a safe space for children to play together on their street.

Play streets are short temporary road closures, usually organised by neighbours on their own street, which enable children to play out together.

MDCVS Director Sarah Troop said: "Many local organisations recognise the benefit that outdoor play can have on our children and so we have got together to offer support.

"Whether that is help with organising the road closure or planning activities, just give us a call to discuss. We even have some resources such as high vis jackets and playing out kits we can give out."

Residents still have vehicle access and can leave their cars parked on the road during play street sessions. Volunteer stewards stand at each end of the street to prevent any through traffic and keep the street safe.

The appeal comes as part of a "summer of play", led by national organisation Playing Out, which aims to give children the time, space and opportunity to play outside and for communities to come together after a year of sacrifice.

The model has been going strong since 2009, when it was first developed by parents in Bristol. It has since been implemented by hundreds of street communities across the UK, with support from councils and local groups.

In a meeting with the Maldon District Community Forum on 14 July, Sarah said: "If there are any streets in your villages or communities that you think might like to do something like this, please get in contact so we can start the ball rolling to get the road closures done."
