Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, in Hackmans Lane, Purleigh, has announced it has secured "vital" funding to save a historic aircraft - in record time.

The popular local heritage site launched a desperate plea for support on last month, looking to raise £2,500 in donations. Funds were needed to cover transport and rebuilding costs for a rare Sopwith Tabloid 168 aircraft, presently in pieces in Hendon, London.

In just six days, the online fundraiser "smashed expectations" and exceeded the target.

The aircraft was offered by the world-famous Royal Air Force Museum, which agreed to meet some of the costs, but Stow Maries needed to find the rest. Organisers turned to the community, "throwing themselves on the mercy of supporters".

Ian Flint, Chief Executive Officer of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, said: "We could not believe it when the donations started pouring in.

"What makes it even more special is the number of donors – so many people gave something. With times being so tough for everyone, we never expected such a ground swell of support.

"Now, Tabloid 168 will be in pride of place in Hangar 1, and will stay there for the foreseeable future, for all our visitors to enjoy.

"We owe such a huge debt of thanks to everyone and are incredibly grateful indeed."

The aircraft will be located alongside other rare aircraft in the growing collection of specialist early aircraft in display. It is due to arrive later this year.
