Maldon's former police station officially opened last Friday (June 30), as the new premises of South Woodham-based accountancy firm Pocknells.

The opening was attended by Maldon District Council Chairman Kevin Lagan, Town Mayor Andrew Lay, and Maldon MP Sir John Whittingdale.

Sir John, who cut the ribbon, said: "I am delighted to welcome Pocknells to the town and congratulate them on a fantastic job in converting the old Police Station into their new office headquarters.

"Having been an iconic building with a wonderful history, for the last few years it has been an eyesore in the centre of the town."

Located at the junction of West Square with High Street, the Edwardian building was restored by Wait Edwards Ltd.

The extensive refurbishment took 12 months to complete, converting the building into modern offices while retaining the original features of the Police Station, including the cells.

"It is marvellous that so many original features of the police station have been kept while still bringing the building back into use with modern office facilities," Sir John added.

The police station was purpose built in 1912 and closed in 2017.

A timeline wall display has been incorporated into the décor, researched by local historian Stephen Nunn and Pocknells PA Mollie Coppola. Contributions have been made by police officers who served there, and other residents connected with the building.
