Maldon families pay tribute to loved ones as 'beautiful' cemetery marks annual day of dedication

Local News by Charlotte Lillywhite 8th Dec 2021

A number of families gathered at Maldon Cemetery this weekend to mark its annual day of dedication, with local celebrant Glenn Mayes leading a short dedication for those gathered.

The families joined the cemetery team in the Woodland Glade area of the grounds on Saturday (4 December) to plant trees and shrubs as a lasting and living tribute to their loved ones who have passed, and to help the area flourish into a beautiful woodland.

One resident said: "The efforts of the cemetery team are very much appreciated and it was, for me and my family, a very moving day."

Another said: "It was well organised and the prayers were really thoughtful and brought a tear to my eye."

They thanked the cemetery team, from Maldon District Council, for their "help and support with everything since mum passed away".

The team has been working alongside Friends of Maldon Cemetery and other volunteers on several initiatives over the past year to recognise and encourage wildlife in the area.

One such project is the Blue Heart campaign, which encourages areas of wildflowers and grasses to be left for butterflies, bees, other insects and small animals.

The cemetery team has also signed up to a national campaign to become "Hog Heroes" to help protect the area's hedgehogs by providing them with undisturbed habitat, after finding evidence of them living in the cemetery.

A spokesperson for Maldon District Council said: "The philosophy of the natural burial area is entirely aimed at the development of a natural environment, creating a peaceful, tranquil resting place with an awareness of the ecological benefits that come from the establishment of woodlands and natural grasses.

"The area's natural approach means it is a living place - as the seasons change, the woodlands change in their character.

"The natural grasses, spring and summer wildflowers and the autumnal colours make this a beautiful setting to visit and remember a loved one."

Councillor Carlie Mayes, vice-chairman of Maldon District Council and chairman of the Friends of Maldon Cemetery, said: "I am delighted that so many families joined us for what is always a very moving and poignant occasion.

"I am grateful not only to our cemetery team, but also the dedicated volunteers and Friends of Maldon Cemetery, who work tirelessly to provide a beautiful place where visitors can take the time to sit with their own thoughts and appreciate the surroundings in this tranquil place.

"I am always keen to welcome new members to join the Friends of Maldon Cemetery, so if you are interested please contact me at 07518 543084 or [email protected]."
