Maldon Film Club: Details of all this season's films
Although Maldon Film Club still has to wait for further guidance to know when the 2021-22 season can get underway, the nineteen films that will be shown have now been selected.
Films are listed alphabetically and not the order in which they will be screened. This decision cannot be taken until a date is set for the start of the next season which the club now hopes will be Tuesday, 7 September.
The 19 selected films include:
A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood
Based on the true story of a real life relationship between Fred Rogers and journalist Lloyd Vogel this is a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism. One Oscar nomination. A Taste of HoneyFilmed on location in Manchester and described as a prize winning comedy drama of a young girl's passionate love for life! Winner of 1 Golden Globe Award.
Bait
Winner of 1 BAFTA Award. Martin Ward is a fisherman without a boat. Whilst struggling to restore the family to their traditional place in the village a tragedy changes his world. Blinded by the LightIn England in 1987 an Asian teenager learns to live his life, understand his family and find his voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen.
Corpus Christi
Daniel experiences a spiritual transformation in a detention centre. Although his criminal record prevents him from applying to the seminary, he has no intention of giving up his dream and decides to minister a small town parish. One Oscar nomination. Honeyland
The last female bee hunter in Europe must save the bees and return the natural balance in Honeyland, when a family of nomadic beekeepers invade her land and threaten her livelihood. Two Oscar nominations. JoJo RabbitA World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl. One Oscar award.
Knives Out
An inquisitive and debonair detective is mysteriously enlisted to investigate the death of a patriarch of an eccentric and combative family. One Oscar nomination. Official SecretsThe true story of a British whistleblower who leaked information to the press about an illegal NSA spy operation designed to push the UN Security Council into sanctioning the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Pain and Glory
Heralded as Pedro Almodovar's best film for years. This is his second collaboration with Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz and tells of an ageing film director who involuntarily looks back on his past. Two Oscar nominations. ParasiteGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbolic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. Four Oscar awards.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
On an isolated island in Brittany a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman. The two women develop a close relationship as they share the future bride's last moments of freedom. Nominated for 1 Golden Globe. Sorry We Missed YouHoping that self employment through the gig economy can solve their woes, a hard up UK delivery driver and his wife struggling to raise a family end up trapped in the vicious circle of this modern day form of exploitation. Another Ken Loach classic which was nominated for 1 BAFTA Film Award.
Sweet Country
Set in 1929 in the sparsely populated outback of the Northern Territory and based on true events, it tells a harsh story against the backdrop of a divided society in the inter war period in Australia. The FarewellA Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark and stage an impromptu wedding in order to see her for one last time. Winner of 1 Golden Globe award.
The Peanut Butter Falcon
An adventure story set in the world of a modern Mark Twain that begins when Zak (22), a young man with Down's Syndrome, runs away from the nursing home where he lives to chase his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. The TruthWhen Fabienne, a star of French cinema, publishes her memoirs her daughter returns from New York. The reunion quickly turns into confrontation; truths will be told, accounts settled, loves and resentments confessed.
The White Crow
Director Ralph Fiennes captures the raw physicality and brilliance of Rudolf Nureyev, whose escape to the West stunned the world at the height of the Cold War. The Film Club meets at Maldon Town Hall with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesday evenings (September to December) and Wednesdays from January until the end of the season in May.
