Maldon firefighters rescued a horse which had suffered a suspected injury to one of its front legs.

Crews from Maldon and Chelmsford, including the Animal Rescue Unit, were called to West Bowers Road, Woodham Walter today (Thursday, 5 November) at 12.22pm.

A 28-year-old horse had slipped and it was feared one of its legs was broken.

Watch Manager Martin Cable said: "The horse was extremely distressed so a vet sedated it and crews used heavy lifting equipment to get it into a standing position.

"We had to keep it upright until the sedation had worn off and the vet and owner were happy it could stand up on its own. Crews did an excellent, professional job and it was good to have a happy ending."

The horse was left in the care of the owner and vet at 2.01pm.
