MALDON came together on Sunday. 6 September to commemorate Merchant Navy Day, with a special service held at Hythe Quay to honour the men and women of the Merchant Navy, past and present.

Organised by Maldon Town Council, the annual commemoration brought together local residents, war veterans, Town Councillors, local dignitaries and members of the Maldon & District Sea Cadets.

The service began with a procession accompanied by Piper Jo, followed by an opening performance of The Red Duster Flag by the Salt Water & Beer Shanty Singers. Father Appiah of St Mary's Church then led the service.

A local Merchant Navy veteran read the Homage, paying tribute to the civilian seafarers who have played a vital role in keeping essential supplies moving during times of peace and conflict.

The Last Post was performed by Legacy Brass, followed by a two-minute silence, marked by a cannon. A member of the Maldon & District Sea Cadets then read the Kohima Epitaph, before the Reveille was played.

Maldon Town Mayor, Cllr James Burrell-Cook, laid a wreath in memory of Merchant Navy personnel. The service concluded with the Sailor's Farewell, the National Anthem and a blessing.

Cllr James Burrell-Cook, Maldon Town Mayor, said: "It was a privilege to join the local community in remembering and honouring the men and women of the Merchant Navy. Their contribution has been, and remains, vital to our nation, particularly in times of conflict.

"Maldon's maritime heritage and close connection with the River Blackwater make it a particularly fitting place for this important commemoration. I would like to thank everyone who attended and all those who helped make the service such a fitting tribute."
