Maldon patient first to receive treatment using new £3.5 million radiotherapy machine

By Chloe Brewster 28th Feb 2025

A man from the Maldon area has been the first to receive treatment by a brand new radiotherapy machine at Southend Hospital.

Leslie Cast, 79, from St Lawrence, is the very first person to receive radiotherapy treatment on the high tech machine, known as the LINAC.

The LINAC works by using beams of X-rays or electrons to focus radiation treatments and target and destroy cancer cells. The treatment works for nearly all types of cancer, anywhere in the body.

Speaking about the experience, Leslie said: "It feels great to be the first patient. The treatment itself was really comfortable.

"The staff made sure everything was set up just right for me, and I didn't feel any discomfort at all. They were also very knowledgeable and supportive.

"For anyone waiting for their cancer treatment, this new equipment is a real step forward.

"I'm sure anyone needing treatment using the new machine will have a much better experience now that the hospital has this new technology."

The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has called the feat "a major leap forward in cancer treatment."

The new LINAC will be housed in a new £5.3 million purpose-built extension to the radiotherapy department at Southend Hospital.
