THE official opening of the new Maldon Skatepark, marked by a special ribbon-cutting ceremony organised by Maldon District Council, took place on Wednesday, 13 May.

The ceremony was led by Cllr Kevin Lagan, Chairman of the Council, who welcomed guests and officially opened the skatepark to the public by cutting the ribbon. Attendees included Doug Wilkinson – Chief Executive of the Council, senior council officers, local councillors and representatives from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex (PFCC).

The new skatepark forms part of Maldon District Council's wider investment in high-quality, modern recreational facilities and has already become a popular feature within the park.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Kevin Lagan said: "This skatepark is a fantastic addition to our district and something I am incredibly proud to see delivered for our community. Spaces like this give young people a positive place to be active, develop new skills and make lasting friendships, while adding real energy to our parks.

"As someone who is passionate about Maldon and the people who live here, it has been especially important to see residents involved in shaping these facilities. This skatepark is a real investment in our community's future, and I hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come."

The opening of Maldon Skatepark also marks the completion of a district-wide skatepark building programme, delivered by Maldon District Council in partnership with Bendcrete Skateparks LTD. This programme has seen the skatepark at Riverside Park in Burnham-on-Crouch completely redeveloped and modernised, as well as the installation of a new skatepark at West Maldon Community Centre.

The programme has seen a total investment of £911,660.80 into the district. This included a £60,000 contribution from the PFCC Safer Streets Fund, providing a shelter and lighting at Maldon Skatepark to make the space safer and more appealing to young people, and women and girls.

Throughout the project, the Council worked closely with residents, including skatepark users, to help design facilities that reflect the needs and expectations of local communities. This collaborative approach has ensured each skatepark provides a high-quality space that supports healthy lifestyles, recreation and social connection across the district.

To celebrate the new Maldon Skatepark, King Ramps will be delivering a free community skate event on on Tuesday 26 May, running from 12noon until 5pm. The event will include a mix of tuition sessions, professional skater demonstrations and friendly competitions, and is open to all ages and abilities, from beginners to experienced skaters.

The Council has expressed thanks to everyone involved in the project and looks forward to seeing residents and visitors enjoy the new skatepark and upcoming community events.
