Maldon Town Council has voted to tell the district council that it does not support plans that would see the High Street closed to cars and vans.
At a meeting of the full council yesterday (Monday, 26 November) evening, councillors were outspoken in their condemnation of the proposals, currently out for public consultation until 16 November.
Councillor Stephen Nunn – who is also a district councillor – told the meeting: "I will never support the closure of the High Street.
"The High Street has been a thoroughfare since Saxon times and I will not vote for its closure.
"I believe it would cause traffic problems throughout the town."
Councillor Jeanette Stilts added: "This scheme is totally not fit for purpose."
The feedback from the town council will now be given to the district council as its response to the consultation.
The news follows a letter from The Maldon Society publicised earlier this week, also sent to the district council and arguing strongly against the High Street plans.
The High Street plans include prioritising the High Street for buses, cyclists and pedestrians and closing it to all non-essential cars and vans.
More information on the proposals and the public consultation is available on the Maldon District Council website available here.
