Maldon Town Council marks Merchant Navy Day with 'special service'

By Charlotte Lillywhite 10th Sep 2021

The sun was shining as Maldon Town Council celebrated Merchant Navy Day on Sunday, 5 September.

Residents gathered at 11.30am at the Hythe Quay in Maldon to mark the day, which commemorates the contribution the navy has made to Britain.

A spokesperson for the town council said: "Maldon is an appropriate place to mark this important date, as it is a maritime town, and its gateway to the sea, the River Blackwater, is a major feature of its history."

The spokesperson said that locals came together for the "special service" to "remember the brave men and women who kept our 'Island Nation' afloat during both World Wars".

The celebration was organised by the town council in partnership with the Maldon branch of the Royal British Legion.

The service was conducted by Father John Dickens from St Mary's Church.

It was attended by Maldon Sea Cadets and Essex Community First Aid volunteers.

Music was provided by the Legacy Brass Quintet, the choir of St Mary's Church - led by Colin Baldy, its music director - and the Shanty Singers.
