MP expresses concerns around changes to leisure centre

An Essex MP says there has been "unacceptable consultation and planning" and "little communication or support" regarding changes to Maldon's leisure centre.
Sir John Whittingdale, who has been the Conservative MP for Maldon since 1992, hit out at Maldon District Council as it has announced plans to shut the main sports hall at Blackwater Leisure Centre in Maldon to various groups and clubs to make way for changes.
The hall and centre are being redeveloped with new climbing walls and a spa-like wellness suite among the new additions.
Sir John Whittingdale said: "Many residents have raised concerns over changes at Blackwater Leisure Centre, which are forcing longstanding clubs and groups, including the high rollers wheelchair basketball club, Maldon pioneers association, and the badminton club, to urgently seek new locations.
"These decisions have been made with little communication or support from Maldon Council.
"My neighbour, Dame Priti Patel, and I, have contacted the council's leadership to demand clarity and action.
"The lack of consultation and planning is unacceptable, and we will keep pressing the council to do better for our constituents.
"I will continue working to ensure those affected receive the support they deserve. If you have been impacted, please let me know and share your experiences."
Richard Siddall, Maldon District Independent Group, leader of Maldon Council, said: "The council is committed to providing timely and comprehensive information to our residents, particularly to those directly impacted by the closure.
"While the decision on the leisure contract was made by the Council on November 14, 2024, it is important to note that the binding legal contract with the two organisations was not finalised and signed until April 1.
"Following this, extensive work was undertaken with our contractors throughout April and May to assess development timelines and determine whether the scheme could commence in 2025 or be delayed to 2026.
"As soon as we had clarity on the timelines, priority was given to communicating with the affected groups. Initial information was sent via email on June 6, encouraging these groups to contact Places Leisure to identify suitable alternative solutions.
"I would also like to highlight that Sir John Whittingdale was informed of the contract award via email on April 2 by the General Manager of the Blackwater Leisure Centre.
"This email outlined key benefits of the new contract and extended an invitation to meet with the Sir John, and discuss the investment opportunity.
"Regrettably, Sir John did not take up this opportunity.
"We continue to work diligently with the directly impacted groups and remain committed to finding suitable alternative solutions where possible."
