Firefighters with Alfie and Belle after their rescue

Firefighters from Maldon stepped in to rescue two pet dogs who had become trapped under a garden shed.

Jack Russells Alfie and Belle had been playing in the garden when they ventured under the shed at a home in Cross Road, and could not get back out.

Firefighters used air bag lifting tools to lift the shed up so Alfie and Belle could get back to their worried owners.

Station Manager Lee Hurst said: "Both dogs were unharmed and happy to have some cuddles with their rescuers afterwards.

"We know dogs love to sunbathe and explore the garden at this time of year. We also know that when they follow their noses, sometimes it can lead them into places they can't get back from.

"Our advice would be not to put yourself in harm's way to attempt to rescue them. Instead, call the RSPCA who will call us for assistance if needed."
