150 new homes are set to be be built near 'one of the worst junctions ever' in an Essex village. The proposals by Jonny Hill, Burlington UK, were given the green light by councillors on October 15.

The site is near to Pump House, Catchpole Lane in Great Totham. The proposals also include 40 per cent affordable housing.

Maldon District Council's District Planning Committee debated the plans at the meeting. Councillors raised various concerns about the development. The meeting heard how landscaping and footpaths were amended in the proposals following the feedback.

Cllr Jade Hughes said: "So here we are again, another massive development trying to ruin our fantastic villages and before long Great Totham is just going to join with Wickham Bishops and become one. I say enough is enough." She said schools and services are "already struggling."

Cllr Linda Haywood said the site is next to "one of the worst junctions that's ever been designed." She added: "You take your life in your hands to come out of that junction. It's an accident waiting to happen. Are we actually saying this development will come out onto a 60mph road." She also raised concerns about cul-de-sac planning applications and a "complete bottleneck."

Echoing the road concerns, Cllr Paula Spenceley called the road a "notorious accident blackspot." She added that "constant traffic issues" are "not being considered." She raised concerns about the wider impact of various developments across the area.

The applicant said there are no "substantial reasons for refusal." He added: "Just over £1.5million will be secured to fund improvements and expansions to key local services. We are grateful to your officers and consultees for the improvements they have helped us deliver. I am proud to see the application has been supported by 50 residents."

He added the financial contributions will be used to improve education, health care, and buses.
