Another tree has been planted in Maldon to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, ahead of celebrations taking place in the town later this year.

The tree is the second of seven to be planted by Maldon Town Council to mark each decade of the Queen's 70-year reign, and can be found at Plume Academy's campus on Fambridge Road.

It is part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative, which aims to encourage people across the UK to plant a tree for the Platinum Jubilee.

A spokesperson for Plume Academy said the school "proudly marked the Queen's Platinum Jubilee" by planting the tree.

The spokesperson continued: "Mill Road Campus students will also have their own tree to celebrate this special and historic occasion.

"As part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Her Majesty is inviting people from across the UK to plant a tree for the Jubilee to create a legacy in honour of the Queen's Leadership which will benefit future generations.

"Once planted, the tree positions will be pinned to the Queen's Green Canopy online map as a lasting tribute.

"Plume Academy will be one of many locations across the United Kingdom to feature on the map."

Later events to mark the Platinum Jubilee will take place across a four-day Bank Holiday weekend - beginning on Thursday, 2 June and continuing until Sunday, 5 June.

A red, white and blue theme is being planned for Maldon, which will involve the installation of a bunting along the high street and the decoration of Moot Hall.

There will be a service at All Saints Church, on Church Walk, which is currently invitation only due to potential Covid restrictions.

Town councillors are also set to encourage residents to hold street parties, while applications are open for groups to submit events they could bring to open spaces in Maldon - with ideas for the Platinum Jubilee particularly encouraged.
