As the day began and the mist lifted at Maldon's Hythe Quay this morning (Wednesday, 24 March) the scene was set for a brief return to past times - and filming for The Essex Serpent.

Strewn with barrels, barrows, salt, coal, sawdust and even fake fish, the quay and the Thames Sailing barges it is so famous for have been dressed for the filming of the TV drama series, set in Victorian times and based on author Sarah Perry's award-winning novel.

Actors Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston will star in The Essex Serpent, a new Apple Original drama series.

Hiddleston will play the lead role of 'Will Ransome,' the trusted leader of a small rural community.

The Essex Serpent follows newly widowed Cora (played by Claire Danes) who, having been released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.

The two huge marquees in Promenade Park will be where actors, make-up artists and film crew are based during filming at the quay and at other locations in the town over the coming days, including the Blue Boar pub in Silver Street.
