The new Chairman of Maldon District Council, Independent Councillor Mark Heard, is writing regular column pieces to keep in touch with residents. Here he reflects on the 2020 pandemic.

For most of us 2020 has been the most unusual year imaginable; nothing could have prepared us to be as affected by Covid-19 as we have. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the well-recognised high-profile key workers whether they be scientists, doctors, teachers or food carriers and we showed our gratitude as we stood on our doorsteps and clapped for carers.

Sometimes 'normality' goes unrecognised until something goes wrong - but I want you to know the business of Maldon District Council has continued - almost uninterrupted - and the service we provide has continued to shine brightly. We have a great team!

I recently went to a very assuring meeting called the 'Responsible Authorities Group' which reports on working partnerships in Maldon District and I would like to share with you some of the items raised.

Police patrols have increased in the district, figures indicate there is an improving picture with crime falling. Look out for appropriately marked dedicated 'Rural' cars. They will soon be installing a 24-hour contact phone outside Maldon Police Station located next to the council offices.

The probation service is fully engaged with the council helping offenders by involving them with initiatives to discourage any downward path to crime.

Youth services are dealing with interventions, getting into new areas by working with the Community Protection Team (Rangers) identifying hotspots and mental health issues which are coming to the fore with young people.

Essex County Council schools gave an update that filming bullying in schools is under scrutiny. We must remember this is a crime and should be reported.

Fire Service: I received an update that the team engaged locally by calling at hundreds of homes to advise on fire safety.

We now have the long-awaited vaccine heralding the beginning of the end of this dreadful virus and once again Maldon District Council is working with partners to facilitate the enormous task of administering it. Sadly, there has been an alarming rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in Essex and the district, so please keep to the rules - keep social distancing and keep Covid away from your loved ones to help our hospitals cope with the extra winter demands.

Think: 'What SHOULD I do' rather than 'What can I get away with?'
