Residents have told of their concerns over hundreds of nitrous oxide canisters regularly appearing at a site close to the canal in Heybridge.

In recent months, large quantities of small silver canisters have been left at the deserted spot next to the towpath as it leads away from Holloway Road towards the Bentall's shopping centre.

Two residents, who contacted Maldon Nub News about the issue but did not wish to be named, told how they have reported the matter to police "a number of times". However, each time the canisters disappear they are soon replaced by more.

One of the residents spoke of her worries for the safety of the people using the substance in the secluded spot - and of the potential threat the dumped canisters could cause to nearby wildlife on the canal. Another concern raised is the possibility that those using the gas could be driving immediately afterwards, as tyre tracks are clearly visible at the site, suggesting people may have met there in cars.

She said: "I'd ask people if they know where their children are and who is supplying these? One sniff could kill! Do people know what their children are ordering online?

"If someone was taken ill there with these things, unless a person with them went for help they wouldn't easily be seen - and it's right next to the water.

"Surely if people are driving after using these things there's a danger to other road users, too."

Essex Police have been approached for a comment.
