Results of Essex road policing survey are out: more enforcement is needed

By The Editor 16th Oct 2020

A road policing survey highlighted by Maldon Nub News in September has found that Essex residents want more enforcement of traffic offences and tougher penalties for those who speed or refuse to wear a seat belt.

The online survey will now help Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, Roger Hirst, give feedback for the Department of Transport's 'Call for Evidence' which is looking at how enforcement can be enhanced.

Headline results of the road policing survey

A total of 3,740 people took part in the survey and the headline results are:

  • More than 40 per cent said they felt unsafe or very unsafe on the roads
  • More than 60 per cent said they witness road traffic offences on a daily basis
  • 88 per cent either agreed or agreed strongly that road safety offences required more enforcement
  • 75 per cent said they either agreed or strongly agreed that fixed penalty notices for speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt should be increased.

"More people in Essex die on our roads than in any other kind of accident or crime."

Roger Hirst said: "Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The results clearly show people are concerned and want more enforcement.

"Improving safety on our roads are priorities and we will continue to work hard to respond to the concerns of Essex residents to reduce harm on the roads and promote safer driving.

"More people in Essex die on our roads than in any other kind of accident or crime. That's why it is so important that we were able contribute to this review so we can make a difference in the future."
