A ROTARY club president has warned that without new members the group may not be able to carry on.

President of the Rotary Club of Heybridge Blackwater, Malcolm Myles, said the small number of members left are older people and that without new Rotarians coming along, the club is likely to have to close in June next year.

Mr Myles said: "I have been president for three years now, which is longer than I am supposed to have been under our rules, but there are not many of us left.

"We raise lots of money for local charities and good causes and we there's a meeting once a month and a meal once a month.

"It means so much to me, but if we can't find new members now, sadly we just won't be able to carry on."

At the moment, the club is putting on a schedule of local Santa sleigh rides, as is the Rotary Club of Maldon.

While the Maldon club is not under threat of closure, it too is urgently seeking new members.

Public relations spokesman James Howard said: "Membership of a Rotary Club would really suit anyone who has enjoyed volunteering or helping out in the pandemic crisis. If you're community-minded it's something that might appeal to you."
