This week saw the launch of a new Social Supermarket for the Maldon District, trialing in the Maldon District Council offices throughout September.

This new service will provide households with the opportunity to purchase store cupboard essentials at a fraction of the cost in supermarkets.

Shoppers can choose from a range of products, with prices starting at just five pounds for twelve items.

Sarah Troop, Director at Maldon and District CVS, the charity behind the initiative said: "As with any new service we were unsure what the take up would be, but we had people queuing to get in even before we opened.

"It is great to see that this service is meeting a need in the community, and we have actively asking for feedback so we can develop it further and really get this right for people"

A spokesperson for Maldon District Council, said; "We were really pleased to see at first-hand how successful this first pilot has been. The positive comments from everyone, clearly shows that support like this is so important to our community.

"We would like to thank everyone who have helped to deliver such a brilliant first Social Supermarket and the feedback we have been given will enable the next one to be even better."

Shoppers at the session, which ran for 90 minutes, were invited in for free refreshments to provide feedback on the shopping experience which will be used to shape how future sessions are run, the stock made available and the overall experience.

Two more pilot sessions are planned for this month at the Maldon District Council offices on Princes Road:

September 17: 1:30- 15:00

September 24: 10:30-12:00

Anyone who is interested in finding out more is welcome to come along, do some shopping or leave some feedback. The Charity is also looking for volunteers to help to run future sessions.

Maldon and District CVS have been working alongside Essex County Council and Maldon District Council to develop the project, this support includes funding as part of the Community Supermarket Initiative and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
