THE Maldon Society's lastest meeting this coming week will be a virtual cruise along the Blackwater Estuary

John Rogers will give a 'then and now' illustrated commentary of the landmarks, history and stories one is reminded of on a boat cruise up the vast and beautiful Blackwater Estuary.

The 15 mile cruise will pass familiar landmarks such as St Peter's Chapel, Bradwell power station and Stansgate Abbey as well as passing the three islands – West Mersea, Osea and Northey. We also pass creeks leading to the small ports of Tollesbury, Goldhanger, Mayland, the sea lock at Heybridge Basin and the entrance to Blackwater Chelmer Navigation.

Passing Maldon's historic Hythe quay, the cruise will continue under Fullbridge, past Ironworks Meadow Nature Reserve then under the bypass bridge.

The final headwaters of the estuary take us past Beeleigh Abbey and mill and we finally drop anchor near Beeleigh falls.

Consideration will be given to other vessels likely to be encountered on the cruise also some of the estuary wildlife.

The talk will take place in the Cygnet Room behind the Swan Hotel.

Doors will open as usual at 6.30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7pm. Pre-register by emailing: [email protected] or ringing Dorreen on 01621 853428.
