The Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, made a return to British skies on Thursday night (October 10), dazzling onlookers with stunning purple and green lights.

The lights, caused by an intense Geomagnetic storm, covered social media on Friday as keen night owls snapped pictures of the display.

While the lights were visible for many in Essex, the Met Office had previously told weather watchers up North that the Aurora sightings were likely, with only "a slight chance" it would be visible in the South.

Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

As they collide, light is emitted at various wavelengths, creating colourful displays in the sky.

In May, Brits saw the Northern Lights for multiple days in a row.
