CONFIRMED cases of Covid-19 have more than doubled in the past seven days in Maldon district – though figures remain the second lowest in the county.

According to figures updated yesterday (Sunday, 27 September) there were six confirmed cases of coronavirus in the district area. In the previous weeks, this had varied from two to three cases in any seven day period.

The latest figure takes the rate of confirmed cases for Maldon, Burnham-on-Crouch and the surrounding villages up to 9.2 per 100,000 population.

The county has seen a rise in cases with 248 overall in the last seven days and a rate per 100,000 people of 16.7, compared to 11.4 per 100,000 as of Wednesday last week.

Currently, Epping Forest is the district with the highest level of new cases – 41 new confirmed infections, equal to 31.1 per 100,000. Tendring is the lowest with eight new cases or 5.5 per 100,000.

The figures do not include cases in Thurrock and Southend, as these are unitary authorities.

Despite the rise, these statistics remain low in comparison to areas of the country where the numbers of new cases are causing concern for the Government. These include some London boroughs – in Redbridge, currently showing the highest level of new cases in the capital, latest figures show more than 58 cases per 100,000 people.
